You can choose to stay in hotels or in apartments, it is really only a personal choice and how well you want to live and how much cooking you want to do yourself and where you want to live.

Renting an apartment really requires you to have some knowledge of Russian/ Ukrainian or you can easily get tricked to get a bad apartment. Apartment itself can be fantastic, but the building it is in, can be in terrible state(Russian style really).

However, it can also give you the touch of authenticity if you want to experience this.

They have two hotels, both are quite central and good quality for a nice price.

First one, oldest and rooms a bit worn down but ok quality and service is good, and good food in restaurant. Breakfast is ok, and they serve you in nice locations.

Black Sea Hotel

The eleven-storeyed building of the hotel "Black Sea" is situated in the very historical centre of Odessa, only five minutes on foot from the railway station. The hotel accommodates 207 comfortable rooms. Each room has air-conditioner, bathroom or shower, toilet, telephone, TV-set.

The hotel includes restaurant-bar with different fish courses, express-bar with wide range of alcohol and alcohol-free drinks, different starters and confectionary products.You will be pleasantly struck there by the superb service. There is also a night club there.

One can find in the lobby of the hotel the currency exchange, souvenir shop and the service bureau, where one can send fax to any country of the world or make a copy.

You may order breakfast, dinner or supper right into the room at any time. The hotel has also a laundry, where you may have your clothes cleaned and your shoes repaired. This is the hotel me and my wife use every time we stay in Odessa now. Price is good and rooms are modern and clean. Service good and food ok. However the best thing is, if you like markets (Russian style) and you want to be close (15 minutes walk) from centre, there is your choice.

We like it and use it, simple as that. Several categories of rooms, however price around 450 Gryvnas ( 1 USD = 5.05 Gryvnas) gives you a good room, howewer you can get very nice rooms for around 550 Gryvnas.

Chernoye More New hotel

In 2006 there has appeared a new 3-star hotel Chernoye More on the 7-9th floors of a brand new shopping mall. Being close to the Odessa center, the hotel offers attractive rates and good quality. Tidy rooms of delicate pastel shades, light and spacious lobby and halls, green spaces with lush palm trees create relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

If you want to indulge in luxury and have a nice time for an affordable price, here is a choice.

However in fall and winter it is far from centre and you can not enjoy the beach and arcade only 5 minutes away from hotel.

But location and rooms are very nice. Recommend for stay in spring and summer.

Right by the charming park Shevchenko and in 20 minutes stroll through the park to the Lanzheron Beach, the Lermontovsky hotel is a perfect place for vacations or health restoration. Each of 33 hotel rooms has air-conditioning, direct dial phone, cable TV, hairdryer and bathroom accessories.

Morskoy hotel

If you are visiting Odessa for its beaches and bright nightlife this hotel will definitely meet your expectations. Located right on the seashore by the sandy beach of Arcadia, the Morskoy Hotel is in a few steps from Ibiza, Itaka, Pago, and Tropicana Night Clubs. So this place is not for solitude seekers in summertime. Nice hotel, but on the beach far from centre, clear hit in the summer.

Palladium hotel

The Palladium Hotel is not for the solitude seekers. With one of the most popular Night Clubs on the lower floor (open October-April), the modern style hotel offers extravagant rooms with equally extravagant names.

Passage hotel

Passage is a tourist class hotel located right in the very heart of Odessa historical center. The beautiful building faces the Deribasovskaya Street and Sobornaya square park with the Cathedral. This hotel is for budget-minded travelers, who do not wish to spend lots on accommodation and willing to set up with some imperfections. Very old fashioned, Rooms not good, but you can find a bargain for large rooms here. Very central location, and gives you feel of being in old castle almost.

Yunost hotel

Price from: USD 44 Location: Franzusky Boulevard, Arcadia area

Located within 10 minutes walk to the seaside and famous Arcadia Beaches, the Yunost Hotel is a medium-priced option for summer holidays in Odessa. After recent renovation the hotel offers freshly remodeled rooms, tidy and brisk restaurant. Plus, friendly and hospitable personnel was always a merit of the Yunost hotel. New hotel, far from centre, maybe a choice in summer, lots of tourists here.

Outside Odessa, and areas to visit in southern Ukraine

Visit the Crimea region.

If you are going to the Crimea it is a 12 hour overnight train ride costing around 10 USD (2 persons sleeper 25 USD, very nice!). If you buy your ticket on the day you are leaving (not recommended) there is one group of cashier windows where you buy your ticket in the train station. If you buy your ticket on any other day (i.e. at least one day in advance) there is a completely separate group of cashier windows where the ticket must be purchased. As the lines can take up to 30 minutes make sure you are in the right one. Nobody in the train station will speak any international language other than Russian. In Simferopol you can take a trolleybus to Yalta via Alushta. The beaches on Crimea in summer are awfully crowded and the beachresorts are very noisy. Its better to go to East Crimea on the Sea of Azov.

If you need tips here, I can provide you with a list of activities, hotels and so forth to make you going for weeks in Crimea.

It’s a fantastic place to visit in spring and summer, even In fall if weather is good.

So I recommend people to go there.

Either by train or by taxi. A taxi will run you around 150-200 USD for up to 3 persons with luggage.

I hope you will try Ukraine some day, it is really worth the experience. Especially Odessa which is a city which can serve as your entry point into Ukraine. It is really worth the money spent, and you will get to see lots of history, mixed with modern lifestyle in the ever so lively Odessa center, with clubs and restaurants.

Black White Pumps

On a pump should the neutral (white) be shorted to the power wires (black and red).?

I kept blowing a 20A fuse and when i disconnect the pump from the circuit board of my jacuzzi it doesnt blow. So, i got out my trusty multi-meter and found that white was shorted to the black and red (when disconnected from the circuit board). I dont work with neutral just normal groun so im kinda scratching my head. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The only colors of insulation allowed by the NEC for the grounded conductor (“neutral”) of an electrical system are white or gray.

The grounded conductor shall never be switched, or be installed so that it is protected by the Overcurrent Protection Device (Circuit Breaker or Fuse).

The only color allowed for an equipment grounding conductor is green, or in some cases, bare copper. If your house is wired with Type NM cable, the grounding conductor will be bare copper. In some cases, the conductors of a cable system (Types NM, AC, and MC, for example) are allowed to be reidentified.

NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES just randomly decide to increase the ampacity of a circuit breaker or fuse. This is almost always illegal, and almost always results in the overcurrent device not opening when it is supposed to. This allows the conductors to overheat, which leads to making the local firefighters leave the table in the middle of a meal in order to save the life and property of someone who listened to bad advice.

If you live in the USA, the pump motor shall be listed [NEC 110.3(B)] to US Standards, and should have a label from a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) placed on it somewhere where it is clearly visible. (This does NOT include a listing mark from CSA, or TUV, unless it is followed by the letters “US”.) If you live in Canada, the same applies; you should see a CSA Mark, or the Mark “UL-Canada”, or “UL-C”.

Most GFCI protective devices do not function when two circuits “share” a “neutral” (really, it is the GROUNDED conductor). When a three wire “network” is used, the grounded conductor must be installed in such a manner that removal of a device from the circuit will not disconnect the “neutral” conductor. This will cause the rest of the devices on both circuits to suddenly be supplied with 240 Volts; not a good or safe situation. All hydromassage tubs require GFCI protection, if the motor is labeled “Double Insulated”, it may not require bonding to the (metallic) water lines; but, if there is a bonding lug on the pump, use it (with a copper conductor not smaller than #8 AWG) anytime you have the tub installed with metallic water lines. Use a listed clamp to bond the conductor to the water line, and install it correctly.

The grounded conductor is always carrying some amount of current, whenever the circuit is being used. It is the “path” that the current uses to return to its source (the panel or load center). I don’t know of an electrician who has never been shocked from a grounded conductor. The Equipment Grounding Conductor should only carry current in a fault situation. This can be a conductor in the cable assembly, or the metal raceway the conductors are installed in.

Get out the Manufacturer’s Installation Instructions and see if the motor is 120 or 240 Volts (240 does not require GFCI protection). Chances are, it is 120 Volts, with another 20 Amp circuit required for a heater or other accessory. Whoever wired the thing was: A) a little short on knowledge, B) trying to save a few bucks on materials, C) a victim of the public school system who never learned how to read, or D) all of the above.
Have the tub checked over by a qualified, licensed electrical contractor. If he can’t fix it, have the manufacturer send out a factory tech; hopefully having had the unit miswired won’t have done any damage that will cause the warranty to be voided.

You didn’t say if this was a new house. I assumed it was. If the house is old enough to have an ungrounded electrical system, a separate Equipment Grounding Conductor must be run back to the panel, and be grounded in accordance with all of the provisions of NEC Article 250. Without that grounding path, the GFCI will not provide an “equipment ground”.

Benjamin Moore says it best: “Color is the lifeblood of design.” Paint will give you the biggest bang for your décor dollar. Color is the first element that the eye sees before shape or size or texture -- color is what makes the first impression.

The trends for 2008 are blues, magenta, lavender, earth tones, neutrals, black and white and metallic.

BLUE: I have heard that blue is the new green. I love denim blue coupled with paper bag tan. It’s earthy, yet modern. Blues give your room an instant calming effect and when using more vibrant colors, blue can cool the overall feeling down.

MAGENTA: Magenta is for the daring! I will never forget the reaction of one of my clients when I painted an accent wall in her townhouse a magenta color.

I was inspired by a magazine ad that featured a box of dark chocolates in a magenta -colored box. I tore out the ad and showed it to my client. She wanted a dramatic change, having gone through a recent divorce. I chose a rich chocolate brown for the small walls in the kitchen and a khaki tan for the remaining living room walls. I got a call when the painters were finished painting the magenta wall. My client was shrieking into the phone “This is not the right color!” I went over immediately thinking that perhaps there had been a mistake. But it was the right color. I asked my client to please wait until the room was completed.

Thankfully, I stuck to my vision and the client, in the end, could see how the magenta wall was critically important to the overall design of the townhouse. Once the area rug, extensive artwork collection and accessories were in, my client could see how everything tied together. And now five years later she still loves it and so do her friends!

LAVENDER: All trends start on the fashion runway. Lavender was in five years ago and has made a comeback. Lavender can be used as a neutral if you apply it to all of your surroundings, walls, fabrics, area rugs, etc. Mixing textures keeps it from feeling fussy.

EARTH TONES: 2008 Earth tones are not the earth tones of the70’s. Tomato reds punctuate caramels, browns and deep curries.

NEW NEUTRALS: Neutrals are the easiest way to get a timeless look. You can also get more flexibility when you use neutrals. Parchment, chalk and slate lend the perfect background for all kinds of accent color combinations.

BLACK AND WHITE: Black and white rooms are best for big bold patterns. You can combine large and small patterns easily when your base colors are all in black and white.

METALLIC: They are back in hand bags and shoes and interior designers are adding metallic to wall color as well. For a little surprise, I like to use a metallic paint on a powder-room ceiling. You could also use a metallic paint on the dining room ceiling to reflect the dancing light of your chandelier!

I believe that people are drawn to the same colors that they like to wear. You want to look good IN your house! So take a look at your wardrobe, are there dominant colors that you could draw from?

It’s all about how you use color that determines the success of your decor. What kind of natural light does your home have? Lighting changes the way your colors will look, from wall to wall and at different times of the day. Ask your paint dealer to give you the large designer samples (they may charge $1 per sample) of the color you would like to use. Tape (with blue painter’s tape) several of those samples around a room. You then have the opportunity to see how the color changes from morning to night before you paint!

An easy way to get a sophisticated look is to choose one color and use several shades of that color. Paint the dining room walls in the darkest value of the color you have chosen to create a cozy feeling at night. Then paint the living/great room in the medium shade of the original color and paint the kitchen in the next shade up. Another trend is to paint the ceiling in the same color as the wall color for a seamless blend.

You don’t have to be bold with your room colors. Using a hint of an accent color like magenta as an accessory can be the ingredient that makes your room pop! Color used in small doses can be easier for family members to digest.
